There are many types of scans during pregnancy. At SpringHill Clinic, we offer a full range of scans for any stage of your pregnancy whether it is a single pregnancy or a multiple pregnancy.

Types of scans during pregnancy

There are many types of scans during pregnancy with different indications and at variable timings. The main benefits of pregnancy ultrasounds are:

This scan will help to confirm the pregnancy ,including the location of pregnancy, number of fetuses and the heartbeat. The gestational sac can be seen as early as four and a half weeks of gestation. The embryo can be seen and measured by about five and a half weeks. Apart from this, the scan also helps in:

  • Confirming the location of pregnancy within the cavity of the uterus (normal) or out of uterine cavity (ectopic pregnancy).
  • Accurate dating of the pregnancy. This is particularly important for women who have irregular menstrual cycle, do not know the date of their last menstrual period, have conceived while  breastfeeding or soon after stopping the pill.
  • To diagnose multiple pregnancy. Approximately 2% of natural conceptions and 10% of assisted conceptions result in a multiple pregnancies.
  • To diagnose early pregnancy failure. Sadly, approximately 3% of women who attend for an early pregnancy scan will find that the fetus has died or has not developed. In this case, we will arrange and advised as to other procedures that may be necessary.

Nuchal Translucency scan (NT Scan) is usually done between 11 and 13 weeks 6 days however the crown rum length (CRL) from the top of the baby’s head to the bottom of the spine should be within 45 and 84 mm.

NT scan is done to assess of likelihood of a chromosomal abnormality, such as Down syndrome and  other conditions. If this is your first scan, then dating the pregnancy and diagnosing multiple pregnancies are done at the same time.

This scan can detect the gender of your baby. This scan is usually performed after 16 weeks of pregnancy but usually done around 20 weeks along with the detail scan. Gender assessment accuracy  is about 97% by ultrasound.

It should be noted ultrasound cannot provide 100% confirmation, since in some occasions the images can be ambiguous or due to suboptimal view.

Fetal anomaly scan is a scan when your baby will be systematically screened to look for structural abnormalities in your baby.A detailed scan will be done by the experienced & well trained Sonographer , who will carefully and thoroughly check your baby’s features, organs, skeletal system. This scan will usually take around 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the position of the baby.

Fetal wellbeing scan is usually done to check on how well the baby is growing .Apart from this, the scan is also done to :

Monitoring fetal growth (rule out growth retardation/big baby)

Presentation of the baby (which way the baby is facing)

Doppler for monitoring blood flow to the baby and placenta

Position of the placenta

Amount of fluid around the baby ( oligo/poly hydramnion )

Individual growth of babies in multiple pregnancy

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. When women are not pregnant, it is normally at least 3 cm long. During pregnancy, a short cervical length is associated with a risk of spontaneous preterm birth. The shorter the cervical length, the greater the risk. Therefore, measuring cervical length by ultrasound can help predict spontaneous preterm birth.

Cervical length can be assesses using a vaginal or abdominal ultrasound .

4D/5D scan is a parent-baby bonding experience providing memories that you are going to cherish forever. It offers you a unique experience to explore your unborn child’s magical world.

4D creates a live video effect, like a movie for you to watch your baby in action. The baby can be seen in the three dimensional image.

Wherelse 5D is an exciting new technology that lets you see your baby in realistic view. This will show baby with reddish/pinkish color as if you are seeing baby inside the womb.

The moment you watch your baby smile, kick, suck a thumb, or yawn, making it a truly unforgettable experience for any loving parent.

At SpringHill Clinic, we provide you with videos and pictures of the baby to kept as a remembrance.
